Open source software is an idea whose time has finally come. Despite the claims of competitors that it is disruptive technology, it has steadily been building momentum for over twenty years. IBM® is one industry leader who has embraced the open source community. In mid-June 1998, IBM chose the open source Apache Web server to support and bundle with its WebSphere® suite. Since that time, the IBM commitment to open source has grown substantially, from contributing to Linux kernel development to enabling Linux as one of the primary operating systems available on its high-end pSeries® eServers.
History
In mid-1995, Michael "Monty" Widenius and David Axmark developed MySQL for internal use. At the time, they needed a lightweight solution that gave them access to their data over the Internet. No viable solution was available then. After completing their project, they realized its value and released it to the open source community in hopes that others would benefit. As a result, in 1998 when the Internet really took off and when web developers needed access to their data, MySQL was there.
The original intent of the inventors was to create a low-cost data management solution available for everyone in the open source community. It would be lightweight and optimized for Web applications. Today, MySQL is the most popular and most widely used database in the open source community with over four million users worldwide, including several Fortune 500 companies. Binaries and source code are available to download from
http://www.mysql.com/downloads/. The source and binaries are currently available in a gzip tar format.
Binaries
To download the binaries use either the three-step download method or the shortcut download method.
Three-step download method
1. Download the MySQLVERSION.tar.gz file to a location where you can create files and directories. VERSION represents the version of your operating system (such as AIX 5.2) and the standard or debug version of the current distribution. Unless you are planning on doing some troubleshooting or debugging of code, you should download the standard version.
2. Run gunzip on MySQLVERSION.tar.gz. This step creates a MySQLVERSION.tar file.
3. Run tar ?xvf MySQLVERSION.tar.gz. This step creates binaries in which the executables are located in PREFERRED LOCATION/bin and the libraries are located in PREFERRED LOCATION/lib where PREFERRED LOCATION is the place you specified in Step 1.
Shortcut download method
1. Download the MySQLVERSION.tar.gz file to a location where you can create files and directories. VERSION represents the version of your operating system (such as AIX 5.2) and the standard or debug version of the current distribution. Unless you are planning on doing some troubleshooting or debugging of code, you should download the standard version.
2. Run gunzip MySQLVERSION.tar.gz | tar ?xvf -.
Setup procedures
At this point, you should familiarize yourself with the setup procedures and print out the README file located at the top directory. It contains useful information on configuring your environment to run MySQL. You will have to follow the directions step by step in the section titled "Detail Description" to install the binaries.
Step 1 of the README file asks you to add a MySQL user and group. The proper command under AIX is:
> mkuser mysql (Creates MySQL user)
> mkgroup adms=mysql mysql (Creates MySQL group and adds MySQL user to it)
Continue with Step 2 of the README file to configure your MySQL binaries.
Source
If you have chosen to take the road less traveled and build the binaries on your own, you must, at a minimum, invoke the configuration tool to compile the source with the parameters listed below. The following build options assume you are using VisualAge C++ Compiler 6.0. You can find the parameters at the MySQL site under IBM/AIX platform-specific notes.
